Tourist walk of shame

Philippines

I don't know if stealing a bike from a certain place would be a good idea since you're visiting a certain country and enjoying their festivities. And you obviously pay a LOT since you're a foreigner. Obviously, these couple were kinda drunk in my opinion, how could they think of doing that. We could think they're just being accused but I just saw this in the news so I can't conclude. But it's really humiliating to be put to that situation when you're in a foreign land.
JAKARTA - Two Australian tourists accused of stealing a bicycle have been forced to take a "walk of shame" through an Indonesian island with signs round their necks, an official said Tuesday.

That is quite a shame indeed . A shame that you are in a foreign land , yet you do something that you know is wrong in all angles. But at least they weren't put in prison for a day or two .

That's terrible. But stealing is still not right. I heard that in some countries like Iran or Iraq, the stealer's hand will be cut off. This is a serious and horrble punishment. Different countries have different punishment. These tourists will learn a big lesson from it.

@Letranknight2015 I also agree their punishment is so bad. But I think it can really scare those people who want to make a crime.

@youless That is something people will remember the next time they visit another country.

In the middle east, the punishment is really that worst @youless that's why people need to follow other countries rules.

I really don't know the details other than what's written in the news article, but if they're really guilty, I just find it strange that they can afford to travel but had to steal a bicycle.

@Letranknight2015 They could be, I don't know. I haven't read any other news articles about the incident.

well, this was the discussion i wished to comment on last night, until that internal error popped out in the net book. these tourists thought the government is lax in arresting them, but it proved otherwise. this happened here in our country, right? a certain city in the Metropolis also had some bad elements walked in shame, and yet, there are still many offenders who do their illegal activities.

If the accusation is true, this proves how ignorant and foolish they are when it comes to respecting rules and customs of other countries @ridingbet I hope it's a big lesson for them.

@Letranknight2015 i am not a racist of course, but i think these tourists believe that because they are Caucasians, that our police authorities will not have their eyes laid on them. i believe not all tourists are like these, that is why only a handful of them think they are above the law

I actually think it would be effective but they must be proven guilty first!

Well, not sure if they even had a trial @MarymargII I mean they did that walk of shame, as if they are already guilty of it.

@Letranknight2015 I meant the whole situation -- like the tourists stealing a bike. Didn't they know they would be punished if caught?

The bad thing on this situation is that if you visit a foreign country, you present your nation and your ethnicity. What they did might worsen the treatment of people from their country.

They don't seemed to care who they represent, specially those coming from the west @CaptAlbertWhisker but also from other parts of Asia. Well, I hope the locals doesn't generalize them.

Stealing is not at all a good way of bearing your expenses. People bring shame to their country as well.

Yes, that's right @jyotiu28jul if this is true then they brought shame not only to their country but to themselves.
