Winter Means Travel Channel!

I'm still basking in the glow of the Chicago Cubs' World Series championship (I can put "I saw them do it" on my headstone now!), but it's "down time" for me. I don't really care for any other sport than hockey (and I like the sport more than any team in particular, although I tend to favor the nearest team to me, the Nashville Predators), so winter means that I can lose the cable remote and not worry, as long as the cable box is set on the Travel Channel.
I don't watch it in the summer (because I'm always watching baseball) but I hardly miss it in the winter. Thankfully, Booze Traveler is in a new season, as are Expedition Unknown (one episode that aired the other night showed host Josh Gates' reaction as he got a text from his wife telling him he was gonna be a daddy! That was so sweet) and Mysteries At the Museum (more history on that show than you can find on the "History Channel"!).
A special with Hotel Impossible (one show I don't like) host Anthony Melchiorri exploring ice hotels just aired. That was amazing. What a concept: every year a new hotel is constructed out of ice and snow in various parts of the world where it's cold enough so the building won't melt all winter (sorry, Key West, Florida, maybe next year
). It was fascinating, and the intrinsic details in the ice/snow sculptures is unbelievable.
I also love Booze Traveler, even though I don't drink. (No prudish reasons: there's a history of alcoholism in my family, and I see no reason to tempt fate. Plus, I really don't care for the taste!) Jack Maxwell, the host, is somewhere between Andrew Zimmern (Bizarre Foods host) and Anthony Bourdain (No Reservations host who's now on CNN as host of Parts Unknown). It's quite interesting to see what people drink in other countries, not to mention their attitudes toward drinking and the traditions associated with them.
So until the cries of "Play Ball" ring out in spring training I'll be glued to the Travel Channel.

Yes the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series was the ultimate. I have been a die hard Cub fan since 1968 when I was 10. I was born and raised in Chicago. I do watch Bizarre Foods now and then. It's amazing what that man will put in his mouth lol.

I love Andrew Zimmern and I'd like to meet him. Just not over dinner.

I love watching the Travel Channel too. But there seems to be more food-themed shows than travel & culture these days.

I tend to agree, but one of the significant things about travel is trying cuisine in the areas you're visiting. I think part of that is to get people to do something other than hit McDonald's or Subway when they're in a new place.

@FourWalls True, trying different cuisines is definitely a major thing about traveling. It's just that I prefer to see more shows like Lonely Planet over Anthony Bourdain and Man vs. Food and the like, I guess.

For some reason, we don't really watch the Travel Channel much. I have no reason why.
