Movie Review – A Hard Days Night

Spoiler alerts 1964 The first and best scripted of the Beatles movies is quite an anarcho-punk series of digs at the establishment, elderly, education, the police, Londoners, pretentious arty types, the entertainment industry and the political right, crammed into a flimsy plot of the FAB Four preparing for a live TV broadcast just before they became international superstars. The Beatles are rude to everyone, selfish and vain, running off to muck about when they are expected to stay put. Ringo encourages school truancy and Paul McCartney’s irascible grand-dad played by Steptoe actor Wilfred Bramble is very funny too in a movie full of great one liners, superb captures of the raw hysteria of Beatlemania and of course, great music. A slim excuse for a film, with lots of fun, and a genuinely great performance from Ringo, but the soundtrack really wins the day throughout. Various celebrities and actors appear in before they were famous cameos including Lance Percival, Lionel Blair, Derek Nimmo, Phil Collins and George Harrison’s first wife, Patti Boyd. I love the music and it's always good to see old film of Victor Spinetti but to me the clever-clever dialogue just didn't suit them - not even Lennon.

@asfarasiknow Spinetti is great in the film as are other supporting cast members. Wilfred Bramble really steals the film at times

@asfarasiknow yes most of his scenes are silent - love the characters talking about how 'clean' he is - a dig at his Steptoe 'dirty old man' persona that started 2 years before

@arthurchappell And he often did so without dialogue - incredibly expressive eyes.

I love ABBA but I disliked the movie, mostly for Peirce Brosnan's dreadful singing

The movie was directed by Richard Lester and almost has a cinema verite feel. You could argue this was the first "reality" show.

@JohnRoberts some scenes have a documentary feel and scenes such as the Beatles being interviewed by the media look improvised and close to how they handled the real paperatzi too
