Favorite "Fly" Songs #10 - "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman"

Having taken a foray into baseball, we're back to music here at Team Freak Headquarters, with a new series, Favorite "Fly" Songs. We begin with #10, "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman" by legendary British band The Kinks.
Led by brothers Ray (vocals and guitar) and Dave (lead guitar) Davies, The Kinks formed in Muswell Hill, London, in 1963. The band is in both the Rock and Roll and UK Music Halls of Fame. Interestingly, according to Wikipedia, there are between 100 - 200 Kinks compilations that have been released worldwide. In 1965, The Kinks were banned from touring the United States for four years, ostensibly due to their onstage behavior (at any given show, you were just as likely to see an onstage fist fight as not. The Davies brothers couldn't stand each other, and longtime drummer Mick Avery once hit Dave Davies in the head with his hi hat stand during a show.)
From their 1979 album Low Budget, "(I Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman" was Ray Davies' response to Arista Records head honcho Clive Davis' insistence that the band make a club friendly record. It was the only single from the album released in both the US and UK. Oddly, the song did not chart in the UK, but reached #41 on the Billboard Hot 100.
And there you have it. A fantastic song from a legendary, tension filled band. Enjoy!

The Kinks are right up there with the Who and Stones. Did you read that Ray Davies is now Sir Ray Davies? I wonder if you are Gonna Fly Now later on like Superfly.

@msiduri - The first time I saw the Pretenders, Ray Davies came out and did the encores with them. It was so cool!

Very close. It's "knobbly knees." But very close!

I've been very blessed. When I saw George Jones he actually showed up (although he was eight sheets into a three-sheet wind)
. When I saw the Kinks in Jacksonville in 1979 Ray and Dave were staying on opposite sides of the stage, away from each other, so it was a good night.

@teamfreak16 -- I mentioned when I used "New Orleans Ladies" that LeRoux was the opening act for the Kinks that night. Good show (because, as I said, Ray and Dave kept to themselves).

I wish I could have seen them. They played Red Rocks but it sold out.

Yeah, it wasn't a huge hit. Didn't quite make it into the Top 40.

I LOVED this song as a little kid. I actually had a 45 single of it, which was backed by the hilariously punk "Low Budget". I know "Learning to Fly" by Pink Floyd would be my number one song. Since I haven't seen it yet, maybe it's yours, too!
