It's a balmy 30 degrees (0c) here in the middle of Texas due to a huge cold front that made it's way down from the north. Because of my disabilities, I generally get help from the state program to give a discount off my electric bill. Well according to the news last night, the program has been cancelled due to a lack of funding. Now I'm one of those who when it's 100 (40c) degrees outside, I will have the AC as high as 80 (25c) and in the winter; regardless of the cold, will have the thermostat set on 72 (22c), to save on the electricity. That usually means sweating my butt off in the summer and freezing it in the winter. Now with no help from the state, I don't know what I'm going to do. I guess I should be thrilled I'm still getting $16 a month in Food Stamps and that I have a place to live.

That's a shame but I have a feeling lots of programs are going to end shortly.

Me too @AbbyGreenhill . Now if SS goes to the wayside, a lot of us will be totally screwed. They think the homeless problem is bad now??? Just wait.

@enlightenedpsych2 Why, because of the new administration. They are already talking about cutting social security and medicade and who knows what's next.

@enlightenedpsych2 FYI - Social Security is not a handout so it's not gov't assistance. If you want to have a decent life when you're older, plan for it right now.

Lack of funding? Hate that. Here some get help from local churches, Salvation Army and more. The disabled and seniors should not have to go through this. What if everyone on assistance at least got the poverty level? Wouldn't that be a big help? This country throws away something like 40% of the food raised, yet people do without.

@nanette64 Here, we know certain restaurants are throwing food away. Regulations won't even allow employees to eat this! Sad.

@PatZAnthony Nothing like having the homeless dig through the dumpster for the food instead of being able to sit at a table to eat it.

When I owned a restaurant many years ago, at the end of the night, we took the food to a shelter @PatZAnthony .

Perhaps there will be such a protest from the public that this will ne overturned. Miracles do sometimes happen...

That would be nice @41CombedaleRoad . What really kills me is that the state can't even control how high utility companies can charge their customers either. In just one year, the electric company went from charging .6 cents a Kilowatt to .12 cents.

Oh sheesh, that's terrible. You ought to be able to at least not worry about keeping warm. (Though I think 72 degrees is very comfortable, but I suppose it depends on what you are used to).

Because of the crappy insulation in this place, the heat kicks on for 30 seconds and it's warm in here for about 5 minutes, then it's cold @jaboUK .

That is shameful. I suppose it means that the state legislature did not see funding as important. Ultra-conservatives don't see programs like that as worth funding, I am sorry to say.

But they'll sure pass higher taxes on everybody so that they can build a new Ball Park or Football Stadium @JamesHxstatic .

It makes it bad @Morethanammom because then you have to decide what bills you can pay and what you can't. Or pay the higher electric bill and not buy food. What a choice!

I suppose we should remember to count our blessings.

I try to @Kandae11 , but geez-a-la-weeza, considering everything that's gone wrong lately, I don't even want to think about Friday the 13th.

Keep safe and rely on legislation rules. Perhaps there is better solution.
