Former Chicago Cubs and current free agent right handed starting pitcher Jason Hammel, 34, has drawn interest from the Texas Rangers to join their team prior to the start of the 2017 Major League Baseball season. Hammel became a free agent at the end of the 2016 Major League Baseball season when the Chicago Cubs declined to pick up his one year, $12 million dollar option. Hammel was kept off the Cubs playoff roster since he was sidelined with tightness in his right elbow toward the end of the 2016 regular baseball season. The best bet that Hammel will like have will be a one year contract from any team in the Major Leagues that will be needing his services in 2017.

As a die hard Cub fan I can only wish Jason all the best, however for at least 2 years he has been a half year pitcher, so I can certainly understand any teams wishes to only sign him for one year.

I know what you mean. My late dad always told me "You get what you pay for."

@Deepizzaguy Yes you certainly do. The Cubs picked up Wade Davis from the Royals that could be another amazing acquisition.

@fishtiger58 Wade will be useful for the Cubs bullpen based on his body of work during the playoffs in 2015.

He won't be making $12 million next season.

Hammel will get a decent salary but not $12 million.
