#9 in my Favorite "Fly" Songs series is one that was taken quite literally at the time, as we shall soon see. The ninth slot in this countdown is "Fly Me Courageous" by Drivin' N' Cryin'. Drivin' N' Cryin' was formed by vocalist and guitarist Kevn (Kevin) Kinney in Atlanta, Georgia in 1985. A transplant from Milwaukee, Kinney worked in a sewage treatment plant during the day while playing music gigs at night. The band has toured in support of R.E.M. (the Green Tour,) and, annually, on the anniversary of John Lennon's death, holds the Benefit for the Hopeful concert, benefiting Atlanta Homeless oorganization's. "Fly Me Courageous" is the title track from the band's 1991 Gold album. It performed well enough, reaching #15 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart, and #19 on that magazine's US Mainstream Rock chart. It turned out, however, most popular with the Allied fighter pilots involved in Operation Desert Storm, who would listen to the tune before take off. (According to Kinney, the band began getting requests to play Naval bases during the Gulf War.) "Fly Me Courageous" is a rather catchy song. And if it's good enough for the fighter pilots, it's damn sure good enough for me. (Information verified by Wikipedia)

I saw them on that Green tour with REM. And I concur with you about it being good enough for fighter pilots...in fact, I think that's why I like Van Halen's "Dreams" so much: the Blue Angels footage in the video. PS -- wasn't the guy with the wings in this video also in REM's "Losing My Religion"?

@teamfreak16 -- probably is. I shouldn't watch videos half asleep without my glasses on.

An alternative band that opened for REM that I am unfamiliar with. Their sound is typical of what was played on my radio station. I am clueless why I don't know this apparently popular song.

I only first heard it because my girlfriend at the time had the CD. She really wasn't big on alternative music, so how she found it I have no idea.
