Happy Elvis' birthday to you! It's a new day, and here on what would have been the King's 82nd birthday it's time to look at another song from my list of my ten favorite songs with "day" in the title. #8: Let the Day Begin - The Call They're ba-ack! When I used "Oklahoma" in the state title series I mentioned how underrated I thought these guy were, and how I so, so enjoyed them the two times I saw them. I also mentioned a couple of other things: one, Michael Been really had a presence; and two, a number of their songs carried subtle religious messages. This song -- and video -- show both. As for the former, just look at Been's face as he lip synced the line "here's to the losers in the game" and you'll see what I mean. To the latter, this is generally a positive song, with each line offering a toast to various groups (as an aside, it took a half a dozen listens to this song before I got past the line, "Here's to the soldiers of that bitter war, here's to the Wall that bears their names"...and if you've ever visited the Wall, you understand completely). You probably wouldn't hear any preacher say, "Here's to the dreamers in the bars;" however, the song refers to things such as "the preachers of the sacred words," "the beauty of the stars," and "blessings from above." And, if you've ever studied eschatology, you understand the religious implication of the final line, "Here's to the closing of the age," as well as the title. Don't know or believe any of that? It's still a great song, isn't it? And man, doesn't Tom Ferrier give Joe Walsh a run for his money with the slide solo in this song????? Let the Day Begin Written by Michael Been Recorded by The Call From Let the Day Begin, 1989 Here's to you, my little loves:
Released in 1989 on The Calls "Let The Day Begin" album. The Call is one of the most underated bands of the 1980s if not in history. I have no rights to this...
