Non cycling fans won't recognize #6 in my Favorite Male Cyclists series, but this guy is a stud: mountain bike legend Ned Overend. Ned Overend, officially retired as a mountain bike racer, has been highly competitive in cycling and endurance sports into his 60's. Overend was the first World Cross Country Mountain Bike Champion in 1990. He is a six time NORBA (American) Champion, and is in both the Mountain Bike and United States Cycling Halls of Fame. As great as he was (and he was great,) Ned Overend is probably as well known in the endurance community, if not more so, for his post retirement endeavors. Overend was the XTERRA Triathlon Champion in 1998 and 99, he won the US Masters Cyclocross Championship in 2012 (if you've never watched Cyclocross, it's the coolest cycling related thing you'll ever see,) and was the first ever US Fat Bike Champion in 2015. He is still the Captain of the Specialized Cross Country Mountain Bike Team. Did I mention that this guy is in his 60's? In the 1990's, OLN (now NBCSports Network) showed mountain biking on a regularbasis. I loved watching Ned Overend race. He didn't win every race, but his stanima was unmatched, and his bike handling skills were top notch (want to learn mountain bike skills? Read Ned's book Mountain Bike Like a Champion sometime.) There are guys that had mountain bike careers. Ned Overend has made mountain biking a lifetime endeavor. I love this guy!
Ned invites the crew to his Durango home where we interviewed him on his deck.

You are correct that I have never heard of Ned Overend but he has as the saying goes "The skins on the wall" to prove he is one of the best in his profession. I like sports stars that do their work without the heavy hype coming from the media.

The fringe sports always do it under the radar.
