Odd Food Facts For Today
Movie theaters actually make most of their money from selling snacks – over $650 million per year. I know the cost of popcorn is outrageous!
Did you know that back in the “olden days” soda bottles for soft drinks were sealed with a cork. When opened it made the sound of a “pop” and so that’s why lots of people still call soft drinks “pop.” That’s what I always called it, even though I've never seen a corked bottle for soft drinks. Who knew?
Do you speak Italian? Then you might know that spaghetti means “little strings,” and ravioli means “little turnips.” Linguine means “little tongues”, fettucine means “little ribbons” and vermicelli means “little worms.”
The pickers must pluck the stamens of almost 5000 blossoms to reap just one ounce of saffron, which is why it is the most expensive spice, costing about $35 an ounce.
Oh, and this one really made me gag. The FDA allows peanut butter to contain 210 insect fragments and seven rodent hairs in a 700-gram jar before it is considered to be too unsanitary for public consumption.
What do you think about that?

I love peanut butter that was a fact I could have lived without.

Well, just because the FDA allows it, doesn't mean that peanut butter is contaminated in any way. At least, I hope not. I like it also.

I used to work at a few different movie theatres. The markup on all of the concession items is typically astronomical. Items like popcorn and soda are almost pure profit for them, which is why they focus on upselling so much. That upgrade to the gigantic bucket of popcorn costs the theatre cents (if that), and they end up getting a lot more than that out of your wallet for it. But hey, it comes with a free refill... which still doesn't make it a better value for your money when you consider their costs.

I didn't know that popcorn came with a free refill. Perhaps it does in some theaters. I've never asked.

That's always been true of movie theaters. That's why they prefer showing "popcorn" munchers like Star Wars over serious adult movies.

Popcorn just goes with movies for some reason. That's what we've been led to believe anyway.
