These songs aren't as different as night and day, but that's what I'm doing right now -- looking at ten favorite songs with night and day in the titles. Here's the next song on the "day" songs list.
#5: Every Day I Write the Book - Elvis Costello
This song would be on the top ten list if it sucked, just because of that terrific video! (For you youngsters, this is from 1983, so it's not making fun of Princess Diana.) That is one of my favorite videos, especially the part where "Charles" is typing with the boxing gloves on.
But there's a great, great song to back the video. This was Elvis Costello's first top 40 song in the US, and a sterling example of his terrific songwriting....not to mention the fact that he, like Talking Heads, really didn't fit the "punk" label. Over his brilliant 40-year career (ouch, there I go feeling old again) Costello has done an album with Burt Bacharach, written a song with Sir Paul (his other top 40 hit, "Veronica"), covered a Louvin Brothers song, and did an entire album of country music (the classic Almost Blue, which could be considered the Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music of the 80s for the impact it had on bringing non-country fans in).
And there's this great song. I love that catchy guitar riff, and those typical Costello lyrics ("I'd still own the film rights, you'll be working on the sequel"). It's one of my favorite Elvis Costello songs, and I'm glad it at least made the charts.

Yes indeed, sir. A talented combination.
Here's her rendition of the Sinatra song that lost Scott's coin flip:

An alternative radio standard. People may forget but Costello was once considered cutting edge new wave standing with the Clash, etc.
