Former Chicago White Sox outfielder Jason Coats who was designated for assignment by the White Sox five days ago has been claimed off the waiver wire by the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday.
Coats was designated for assignment when the White Sox claimed off waivers former Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Willy Garcia who was designated for assignment by the Pirates on December 31, 2016.
Coats had a batting average of .200 in 50 at bats during his rookie season in 2016 with the White Sox with was a factor in getting released by the White Sox at the end of the 2016 baseball season.
To make room for Coats in the Rays 40 man roster, the Rays designated for assignment right handed relief pitcher Dylan Floro.
