It's almost over. #2 in my Favorite Male Cyclists series (don't worry, the ladies are next) is Downey, California's Tinker Juarez.
Tinker (David) Juarez has been racing bicycles since 1977, when he was a BMX superstar (he was the Star Interview in Bicycle Moto Cross Magazine's debut issue.) Eventually, Tinker switched to mountain bike racing, with the same stellar results. As he got older, he began competing in 24 Hour races as a solo rider, as well as ultra distance races.
And he's won at each discipline. Tinker won the Gold Medal in Cross Country Mountain Biking at the 1995 Pan American Games, and Silver at the 1994 World Cross Country Championships. He is a three time NORBA (America) Cross Country Champion, and four time National Champ in the 24 Hour Solo category. He is in both the Mountain Bike and ABA BMX Halls of Fame.
They used to show mountain biking on TV a lot in the 1990's, so we got to see Tinker a lot. Coming from BMX, his bike handling skills are among the best, and he has stamina to spare. It was a joy to watch him.
Tinker Juarez now competes in Ultra Distance Road Races. What a cycling career!

Tinker Juarez came to Canmore on Feb 11, 2012 to talk about his upcoming season and his season highlight racing at the 2012 24 Hour World Mountain Bike Champ...

Most 24 hour races are done in teams of four. There are guys like Tinker that do them solo, though.

Really? Shows how much I know. For some reason I thought Downie is in Northern California.

And at 55, he's still going strong. Amazing.
