Before I head up to Columbus to finish off my concert jaunt weekend I'll get the number two songs posted in my series of discussions about my favorite songs with "night" and "day" in the titles. Here's the next "day" song.
#2: What a Change One Day Can Make - Louvin Brothers
Yeah, hillbilly's using a Louvin Brothers song. Whodathunkit.
This album was in my house as long as I can remember. Back then, Ira Louvin's voice didn't sound out-of-this-world, incredibly unique to me. He just sounded like Ira Louvin. That was typical of country music when I was growing up: Buck Owens sounded like Buck Owens, Lefty Frizzell sounded like Lefty Frizzell, and Loretta Lynn sounded like Loretta Lynn.
It was only as an adult that I came to fully appreciate the majesty of Ira's tenor. Other-worldly is a good description. And, admittedly, acquired taste also applies. This isn't for everyone. This is hardcore country music, straight from the rural farms of Sand Mountain in Alabama.
The reason I love this song so much (always have, probably always will) is that it shows such a dynamic contrast in the two brothers' voices. Charlie was singing lower than he normally did, which made Ira's voice sound even higher. Their harmonies were, and still are, revered in country and bluegrass music.
I always say Ira and Charlie Louvin didn't invent brother harmonies, but they dang sure did perfect them.

The song is new to me. With a name like "Louvin" it sounds like an r&b name but listening to the song dispels any such notion lol.
