Have a Glass Of Whiskey

For some of you this might be good news and for some of you who do not partake of the strong stuff it doesn’t mean very much. I used to enjoy the occasional cocktail or two in my younger days but now it has dwindles down to having some punch on holidays and at times sitting with hubby and having some wine or beer. If I would choose to have a drink I prefer to have something simple like a whiskey with a splash of water and not too strong. So for me this news is rather interesting because I always thought that what I refer to as the strong stuff is only good to occasionally be able to imbibe and see the world in a rosy glow. The one unfortunate fact for those who like to have a cocktail now and then is that most alcoholic drinks have a lot of calories and a high sugar content. I remember that was the reason I switched to whiskey and water or mineral water because adding any kind of soda to a drink would just add up the calorie count. So let’s look at what is good about having a drink now and then. Apparently alcohol consumption in moderation has some health benefits. Who would have thought? Well it came as no surprise that wine is known for aiding in brain and heart health. I do enjoy some red wine now and then but as with all things that are not really necessary I have to consider if I have enough to spend on some wine. Now it appears that whiskey is even better, has less sugar and more health benefits. In fact whiskey can help with weight loss. One shot of whiskey comes in at about 60 – 70 calories, has no sugar and is low in carbs. It can also help curb one’s desire for sugar. Among the health benefits offered by whiskey are that it can help prevent cancer, stroke, diabetes and dementia. Whiskey contains ellagic acid which has the ability to neutralize cancer-causing free radicals. It also acts as a blood thinner thus lowering your risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Taking it in moderation can also regulate the body’s insulin. Having a little whiskey on the rocks can help with digestion after a heavy meal. When it comes to weight loss whiskey curbs the appetite and desire for having something sweet. When you’re not feeling well having a bit of warm whiskey, water and honey can help when you have a sore throat because it soothes aggravated tonsils and numbs the pain. However if you are taking cold medication then get a doctor’s advice before you mix whiskey with the medication or read the label and if it advises against alcohol then keep that in mind. I usually don’t like to take any kind of medication so if I feel a bit ill I look for natural remedies so perhaps I can look toward some whiskey as a natural remedy. Having a splash of whiskey can take the edge off of a stressful week, relax the body and serve as a sleep aid. So as long as you drink in moderation whiskey seems to be the way to go. They just don’t mention the fact that expense must also be considered. Here in Latvia a bottle of good whiskey can be kind of expensive. I still haven’t made my choice but with all of the health benefits and my late nights when sleep eludes I might just purchase a bottle and leave it on the shelf for the moments when it can help the most. Do you have a drink occasionally? What do you prefer to drink? http://spoonuniversity.com/lifestyle/whiskey-5-health-benefits-of-drinking

I drink red or white every evening with dinner at home or out. If we have guests or go out, I'll have a cocktail. I like most spirits, including gin, bourbon, vodka, rum, etc...

I have a little, now and again. Whiskey, lemon and honey makes a good cough syrup. My personal concoction of peppermint essential oil, vodka, water and honey allowed me to breathe recently so I'll count that as a good thing.
