Former Texas Rangers closer Shawn Tolleson who became a free agent at the end of the 2016 Major League Baseball season has signed a one year, $1 million dollar contract with the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday. Tolleson has recovered from a back injury that placed him on the shelf since August 2016. One reason the Rangers decided not to bring him back in 2017 was that Tolleson an earned run average of 7.68 which cost him his closer role to Sam Dyson in May 2016. Tolleson has pitched in the Major Leagues with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2012-2013 and the Texas Rangers from 2014-2016. The Rays are hoping that Tolleson can work as an effective relief pitcher like he did for the Rangers in the 2014 and 2015 Major League Baseball seasons.

Very reasonable deal. Rangers can only gain if Tolleson is effective.

When you off a bad year as a free agent, the team signs the players will expect to make a small salary.
