Anyone who knows or is in the music business is well aware of the cost per record. Not much but selling lots of albums can generate a hefty sum. Some albums receive low sales due to bad promotion. Promotion is very important and these days the best promotion is through social media platforms. Some artists are "constantly promoting" their singles or album.
Some social media platforms are more effective than others. YouTube is a great way to promote because potential customers are able to some of the song selections and it gives the customers an opportunity to listen before purchase. No artist should be complaining about their "music" being heard for free. There's many artist who receive lots of views and they're able to make some extra money with YouTube.
There's also iTunes. No artist should be bashful when it comes to promoting. Here's the thing. A lot of fans will post up the music a lot receive compensation for views as well. It appears more and more artists are connected with YouTube. It's a great way to gain more exposure even on albums years back. A lot of artists promote on Twitter and Instagram. Sales are very important for an artist and for the record label.

I think there are pros and cons in having music on social media. One you get recognized and get paid when people hear your song on ytube. The bad thing is that some might not want to buy the ablum if it is on social media. Now it is hard to promote and sell an ablum because some think you get it for free by downloading and listening to it online.
