Speaking About Practicing Medicine

When researching one thing, I come across other things that really surprise me and I always think that sharing this information that I find may be interesting to others. Here’s something I found recently. At any given time, here in the USA, there are about 15,000 persons in comas. To me, that is amazing. And, just imagine how many other persons around the world may also be in a coma? I found this very interesting also. Years ago when anesthesia was first discovered, quite a few fundamentalist Christians objected to its use, saying that it was against the will of God. Later, a very astute doctor changed their minds, when he explained that God put Adam into a “deep sleep” when HE removed one of Adam’s ribs in order to form the woman, Eve. (Genesis 2:21) After that, the idea of anesthesia was accepted more readily. How about this one: There was no chemical test for diabetes until about a hundred years ago. Before that, the only way to check for excessive sugar in the urine was to taste it. A medical book from the 1500s said that doctors felt that it was below their dignity to do that for the patient so the patient or the patient’s servant had to do it. YUK! I never know what I will find, which is why I LOVE to research things and NOW that I'm retired, I have more time to do it.

I am all for using anesthesia, you wouldn't have to convince me!

I have had terrible reactions to anesthesia myself. Spasms for over a week following one surgery and vomiting for three days after another surgery..

@IreneVincent I have been under anesthesia quite a few times, and to the best of my knowledge it's never affected me adversely.
