My Daily Reading This Morning

United States
February 1, 2017 7:48am CST
It is my habit to read something of interest every morning to expand my BRAIN power. I try to learn something new and interesting every morning. So, I thought I would see if I could find something of interest about our first president, George Washington. I found THREE things that I did not know before today. 1. There are ten lakes, eight streams and seven mountains in the U.S. named after George Washington. 2. One of the crops grown on George Washington’s farm was Marijuana. 3. According to a Fact-O-Pedia, “by 1779, as many as one in seven Americans in Washington’s army was black.” What do you think?

I guess that the 2 was hemp to weave sheets and not hemp to smoke. It was a traditional culture in France until the beginning of the 20th C, and you can still find easily old pieces of tissues made with hemp.

Yes, hemp was used for various purposes. What do you mean by "sheets" or "tissues" exactly.

I like to read, but other kinds of books. This holiday I read one of the last books written by Gabriel García Marquez, the colombian Nobel prize. It was about some newspaper people kidnapped by Pablo Escobar, the head of the Medellin cartel.

@Shellyann36 Could be interesting, I guess. I wonder if smoke from "hemp" would have any affect. Hmmmm.

Well, I'm finding out that what Washington grew on his farm was probably "hemp" used for making rope and other things. Not for smoking.

Wasn't Jefferson involved in the 'hemp' business as well?

No wonder George was so level headed about everything. He was able to be relaxed, huh, really interesting. Thank you for sharing! I should do this more. I am more of a random article on Wikipedia person from time to time.

Others are telling me that what Washington grew on his land was "hemp," used for making ropes and not for smoking. I need to research it further.

Now maybe young people will be interested in learning about Washington since he was a "pothead" lol!

Washington may not have "smoked" what was grown on his property. Hemp, I've been told, that was grown back in those days, was mainly for the purpose of making rope and other products. I'm doing some further research into the subject.

I love American History, especially the Founders and the Revolution. I like that you listed some little known facts. That inspires me to find out those type of facts about other historic leaders.
