Many rest areas across the U.S.A. include visitor information centers. Most of these centers are run by volunteers and are a wealth of information. They have miniature libraries about the climate, geography, and history of surrounding counties in each state. Some have museums and the volunteers that run them, usually have a vast knowledge of the area and are willing to point you in the right direction to where your destination is or enhance your knowledge on a particular subject about the area. Many tourist information centers have maps, magazines and brochures about various points of interest in a state and current event information on just about any topic from farmers markets to wine tasting.Besides bathrooms and vending machines, many rest areas have picnic areas, pet areas and hiking trails , with information boards on native trees, fauna and wildlife.Rest areas are more than a restroom break from long hours of driving. They are a way to expand your knowledge and learn more about the area you are passing through and can be an unexpected delightful experience.

It is nice that many areas offer these visitor centers.Getting information from the volunteers about local areas can really make a difference.

My husband and I have been known to grab some of the materials for reading after we travel thru somewhere to see if there is something interesting we need to consider wanting to check out next time we are through there if we have time.
