Prohibition

United States

I recently posted some information about Prohibition in the U.S. but I happened to find another interesting piece of information and I thought I would share. New York City had about 15,000 LEGAL saloons before the Prohibition law was enforced in 1920, but at the end of Prohibition in 1933, there were about 30,000 ILLEGAL saloons. So, in reality, Prohibition laws made the situation WORSE. I’m sure that doesn’t surprise anyone. It seems like all the government has to do is make something illegal and the situation gets worse than it was before.

Prohibition also paved the way for the Mafia and organized crime becoming more powerful and earning great profits.

Yes, that is what followed the prohibition law. Organized crime. And then someone mentioned that the government actually lost the tax on liquor for about 13 years. Now, there is a huge amount of tax that the government collects on liquor each year.

That always seems to be the case. You try to make something better and it gets worse.

That is what the government does, they try to stop something and they just make the situation even worse. Sadly, they still haven't learned from this.
