something strange in the neighbourhood

No, not ghosties. No need to call those ghostbusting folk just yet.
This particular strangeness is connected to our new neighbour/s. Or lack thereof. Our house is semi-detached {not sure what the equivalent is in other countries, but it means two houses connected to each other} and we know they're there. We just can't hear them.
Little old Doris {not her real name} lived next door for years. She had an alcoholic, middle-aged son, and every so often he would come round and they would argue loudly. She called the police on him a couple of times. We heard the arguing and slamming of doors. We heard her heavy steps going up the stairs {next door's stairs are the other side of our living room}. And then she fell, or collapsed, had a stroke, possibly died, I don't know.
A middle-aged couple bought the house. The next few years were filled with the noises of footsteps on stairs and lots of banging. And two cute cats trying to live in my house. Now, three years later, they've sold the house and it appears that they moved out on Friday.
So, we have new neighbour/s. Just one? Or a couple? Gay or straight? Older or younger? Cat lovers or cat haters? We see their car. There it is, on the drive. It comes and goes but we've not yet seen who gets in or out of it. There are no noises. No running up and down the stairs. No loud tellybox watching. No banging of the front door.
It's very frustrating. They're just a few feet away, but I don't know who they are. And I don't know why they're so quiet. Why are you so quiet? Make some noise!
*sigh*
{No, I can't go round and introduce myself. I'm not able to do things like that. I shall just wait till we take delivery of a parcel for them - or vice versa - and then I'll have no choice.}

I was going to suggest you buy a potted plant, knock on their door to welcome them and then you'll know.

No!!!! Just thinking about doing that to someone I actually know makes me anxious! I can't even think of it. Nope.

@Poppylicious we lived in a townhouse (4 units in a row) for a few brief months. I could lay in bed and hear the neighbours children playing......or I felt if we both opened out medicine chest at the same time we could share a good morning.

@Morleyhunt I'd pity the neighbour who opened their medicine cabinet to my ugly mug grinning at them!
