Fingernail fungus treatment

Three months ago I started with a very white spot near the base of two fingernails (ring finger on each hand). As time went on the nail changed its texture. My doctor diagnosed it as fungus and told me to use liquid Lotrimin twice daily. The nails are slowing growing....new nail looking okay and the part growing out is starting to lift off. Now all of a sudden, I find another white spot starting on another fingernail base. Also I just got around to reading the liquid Lotrimin bottle and it says it is not effective on scalp or nails. Did my doctor give me a bum steer? Has anyone else experience fingernail fungus? How did you treat it and was it successful treatment? Would love to hear from you. All my life I have used nail polish and have been very aware of nice nails. Of course I do not use nail polish now since the doctor says fungus lives under nail polish and that I must keep nails exposed to the air. I can understand that but what can I do to get rid of it.

fungus sometimes stays for long time and keeps on reccuring
