Former Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers shortstop Erick Aybar has been signed by the San Diego Padres to a minor league contract on Tuesday.
Aybar, 33, will be competition with Luis Sardinas as the starting shortstop of the San Diego Padres during the spring training sessions that will begin next month.
Aybar became a free agent when the Detroit Tigers decided to let him test the free agent market at the end of the 2016 Major League Baseball season.
The joke from the Padres fans is that most of the infielder positions on their team will be tryouts for free agents that are signed by the team this year since the team is in a rebuilding stage.

I always liked Aybar as an Angel. I hope he can rebound and make the Padres.
