Bone Density

The capability for your bones to hold your body together. Except mine look like Swiss Cheese. Yuppers, my Bone Density Test showed total Osteoporosis in both my hips and Osteopenia (slightly less damage) to the entire spine.
Since my spine already looks like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, that's not good and of course with the hips, I have to worry about fractures and brakes. So now I have to take 1200mg of Calcium and 800mg of Vitamin D-3 per day + Fosamax once a week. Considering I also take a Thyroid med and recently a Cholesterol med, the pharmaceutical companies should appreciate my business.
For someone who has never had to take pills for anything in her life, I guess now I'm making up for it. Geez, I just can't wait to see what's next.

Watch the calcium - Doc told me to take a 500 mg. twice a day - your body can only take in 500 at a time..the rest gets peed out.....Calcium is cheap - I get ours from Amazon. My test showed early stages (minor) in one hip. Ask your doc about the calcium amount and frequency just to be sure.

I wound up buying a bottle that contains 630mg of Calcium and 500 IU of the Vitamin D-3 all in one pill. The directions say to take 2 with a full meal @AbbyGreenhill . What do you think?

I have severe osteo also, I was diagnosed in my late 30's.
They told me that I don't have to fall to fracture my spine because it is that brittle.
I took Fosamax, it was hard on me, it has a lot of unpleasant side effects.
You can only be on that med for 5 years maximum, after that make sure that your doctor takes you off of it.
Try to keep your muscles strong, as the bones need that for support.

Wow, your late 30's? Geez!! I tried to get the Prolia but the insurance won't cover it. I try to do as much as I can in food sources (protein) for the muscles.

@nanette64 There are many reasons why someone gets osteo. Mine was attributed to being an under-weight white woman who smoked and took anti-convulsant medication. They originally advised me that I'd be in a wheelchair by the time I turned 50, that was a few years ago, and I walk just fine, I just have to be careful in the dark or on slippery surfaces not to fall. I also had to give up my ice skates, which was a very sad day for me.

@Juliaacv I've thought about the wheel-chair thing and that scares me.

@nanette64 You need to take it easier, you may be too used to being superwoman and I know it's hard to stop doing what you are used to doing, but obviously it's time to stop pushing yourself so hard. My sister was the same way, even when she was her sickest, she was still trying to be superwoman. Maybe that's best, I don't know. Better than not trying, I suppose.

@Rollo1 It is hard to stop 'doing the do' but with me being by myself, I really have no options. Although I am trying to be more cautious.

Dang girl! It's so good to hear from you. I've missed you @Rollo1 . Yeah, just this morning I unloaded a 70-lb bale of hay from the car into the hay barn and two 50-lb bags of hay and oats. Now mind you this was right after having an oxygen test at the doctors. That test didn't go well. I started with 98% and it dropped to 61% after only 3 minutes of the 6 minute walk and my fingernails were blue.

@marlina Something else I found out too was that if your Thyroid isn't doing it's job, it can cause bone loss. I started taking the med for it back in 2013, but who knows how long the thyroid was screwed up.

I swear girl, when does it end? In our family line, everybody lives to be 88 or older. I'm only 65 for crying out loud. I can't even see me lasting another 23 years @just4him .

@nanette64 My family has longevity in it as well. I'm hoping I make it that long, but it will depend a great deal on my losing weight. A battle I intend to win. My bone density tests show my bones as transparent. So I could fall apart very easily. Hence the Fosamax for my osteoporosis. I leaned over the arm of my armchair to look for a movie in the video cabinet right behind it and leaned into my rib cage and bruised a rib. It's been hurting for a few days now. I'm just glad I didn't break it.

@just4him OMG (rib), apparently we both need to be very careful. I had 3 broken ribs one time (hubby) and it ain't no fun.

Definitely @jstory07 ; otherwise I'd already be in a wheelchair.
