Former Pittsburgh Pirates left handed pitcher Jon Niese, 30, has signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees on Sunday. Niese pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets during the 2016 Major League Baseball which ended for Niese in August when he had surgery to repair a tear in his left meniscus on his left knee while was a member with the Mets. The Mets decided not to renew his $10 million dollar option at the end of the 2016 Major League Baseball season. Niese if he makes the New York Yankees final roster at the end of spring training will be working as a set up relief pitcher or spot starter since the Yankees need a left handed pitcher on their roster that they can afford to pay.

You are correct since Niese will be paid a small salary to stay under the salary cap.
