It's a cat fight for the next position on my countdown of favorite songs that mention America's favorite pets, cats and dogs. As with my "insect" song for today, I would imagine that today's "dog" song is an obvious selection. It's also a really good song, which is what makes it an obvious choice. #8: Bird Dog - Everly Brothers Yeah, this was gonna be left off the list in favor of "What Up, Dog" by Was (Not Was)! And I'll admit up front that this was not the best song on the 45. The B-side was "Devoted to You." Infinitely better song, but this one's no slouch. From the legendary pen of Boudleaux Bryant (who wrote or co-wrote everything from the Everly hits to "Rocky Top" and is in multiple halls of fame with wife and songwriting partner Felice) is this song that likens a guy who's got eyes for someone else's girl to a bird dog. And here's your worthless trivia about the Everly Brothers: they were both Marines. And, on their final tour in the early 70s before they broke up, their piano player and song arranger was Warren Zevon. (Yes, that Warren Zevon.) Phil, the younger, died of emphysema in 2014, two weeks before his 75th birthday. Don Everly turned 80 at the beginning of February. They are in the Rock and Roll and Country Halls of Fame...deservedly so. Their influence on music and harmony is immense. Don (b. Isaac Donald Everly, 1 February 1937, Brownie, Kentucky, USA) and Phil (b. Phillip Everly, 19 January 1939, Chicago, Illinois, USA), the world's most...

Given your love of Rush, I can't wait to see where "Bytor and the Snow Dog" ends up!

This was a hit. Another golden oldie and an odd one compared to Wake Up Little Susie etc.
