History within the soil.

As many of you know, I have a few facebook pages "liked" that give me a tidbit of history across Britain each day. One such page has a member whom often posts things they've found whilst metal detecting. I always get a kick out of seeing these items. The items in question are all assumed to be from the medieval period as the page in question focuses on medieval history. It is while looking at another such post that I thought to do my own searching. No, I didn't go outside with a metal detector and start digging up the backyard. Not that I am adverse to the thought, but for one, I have no metal detector. Instead I went on etsy, my favorite shopping website, and typed in "Metal Detector Finds." Not everything within the search are truly found via metal detecting. Some items are simply t-shirts while the majority are keys and crosses. I don't know much about metal detecting, but I do know that you can adjust the radar to find things deeper within the earth if you so wish. The best place to metal detect, in my opinion, would be Britain. It has such a very vast and brutal history. America, though several centuries old, is still very much in it's infancy. I can't imagine finding much more than a few arrowheads, maybe some old shotgun shells, and plenty of pennies in our soil. Ever been metal detecting? Would you ever consider buying items found from other metal detetcting enthusiasts?

I've never been metal detecting, but have seen people doing it. It's quite common here to see on the news that someone has found a stash of gold coins or something. Often it's farmers as they plow their fields.

We don't hear about it that often here. I think the majority of things found here would be old pennies, tin cans and nails. A vlogger I watch went metal detecting in the woods behind his house, where old ruins of a house once stood. All he found were nails and pennies.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Most of the treasure still to be found will be in rural areas, I would imagine. Places which have never been used for anything more than farmland in the last 1500 years. Or, it will already be under buildings, buried deeply.

I've never tried metal detecting, but it must be exciting when you find something.

I've not done it either, but I've seen it being done on the television. It's something I'd like to do though.

I think know. I have no interest in old stuff and I kinda scared about it. There must be bad spirits who goes with it lol! But I really don't like it. I rather by books and new dresses and shoes.

I believe that we determine whether a spirit can harm us. If we don't allow it, it won't attach to us.

My dad had one when he was younger! He didn't find anything worthy though! I think that if you have something valuable from ancient times you have to report it to the state and thise items are given to museums. I am not sure about the details but that's how it works here in general.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It's ok to find random items and keep them. But if they find antiquities and sell them, they can be arrested. In my country, using a metal detector without a permit is considered illegal.

@besweet Oh okay, I understand that. However, how would they know that antiquities were found unless it was reported? I would think there are some that find these things but don't tell anyone else about it.

I am not sure how it would work here. However, I imagine there are many people who do not report these findings and keep them for themselves.

It would be nice to find something of real value! I doubt I'd want to let it go. I'd get it appraised but not sell it.
