The War Against Pain Killers

United States

Here in the U.S., pain killers have been prescribed for many people, who have become addicted. Now, the government is trying to limit the use of these drugs, due to the fact that many people are overdosing and the death rate is climbing. So, I did a little research and found out that this problem is not NEW. Did you know that the U.S. Department of Agriculture actually gave subsidies to poppyseed growers, prior to 1942, to guarantee that the U.S. didn’t run out of opium? Also, even in the years of the American Civil War, the widespread use of opium as a painkiller created over 100,000 soldiers, who came home from the war, addicted to opium.

Wow I did not know that about the Civil War Soldiers. I understand pain killers if people are in extreme pain but I think a lot of times doctors prescribe then to easily. I have been prescribed them and I just throw the paper away and don't have it filled. I have never taken one.

Most pain can be managed without medication, but I did say MOST. Extreme pain is different. I take an aspirin from time to time, but no prescription pain killers.
