Why have selfies become a worldwide phenomenon?

February 23, 2017 12:47pm CST
If you pay close attention to your surroundings, you'll always see at least one person taking a selfie, right? Be alone, or accompanied... They make a point of recording the moment by forcing some facial expressions to demonstrate the most diverse types of reactions (which for me, it's totally fake). I have absolutely nothing against selfies (sometimes I took mine too), but I can't understand how something so simple / futile has become so popular on a worldwide level. What can you say about it?

It is very annoying. Some are just busy taking selfies that real life passes by.

I guess you could say selfies are like people and their cell phones. There are those that love taking pictures of themselves. I have only taken them because needed them for something.

I guess it's a combination of "because I can" and "it doesn't cost anything". When I was a child, back in the dark ages, we used film cameras to take pictures. Not only did we have to pay for the actual film, but then we had to pay again to have it developed so that we could see the pictures. Therefore people with tight budgets would months to go through a roll of film. That's why some old photos of a winter scene have a summer date stamped on them.

I am useless at taking a selfie I either cut my face off so you only get the top of my head or you get nothing of me in the photo at all which reminds me of my mother who used to take photos of us when we were kids but none of us ever had heads just the photo from the neck down! Perhaps it is hereditary!

Because people in general are desperate attention seekers and Facebook+selfies have ignited this narcissistic trait.
