Day 173
Proverbs 18:12
Proverbs 18:12 Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honor is humility.
Haughty is snobbish, arrogant, thinking you’re better than anyone else, above doing menial tasks. Do you know anyone who fits that description? What thoughts do you entertain regarding that person?
As king, Solomon appointed people to many positions. It would be considered an honor to serve the king in any capacity. However, Solomon saw the haughtiness of the people and looked for those who truly deserved the honor, which he said came with a price – a humble spirit.
In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, the first thing he said regarded a humble spirit.
Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (KJV)
To be poor in spirit means to be humble. It isn’t the arrogant or proud person who inherits eternal life, but those who seek the good of others, helping in any way they can.
Isaiah said God was high and lofty, no one else.
Isa 57:13 When thou cry, let thy companies deliver thee; but the wind shall carry them all away; vanity shall take them: but he that puts his trust in me shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain;
14 And shall say, Cast ye up, cast ye up, prepare the way, take up the stumbling block out of the way of my people.
15 For thus says the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
16 For I will not contend forever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made.
It isn’t a haughty spirit that will gain you anything, but God is looking for a humble and contrite spirit, one who trusts him. Those are the people who will inherit eternal life.
What kind of person are you? Do you have a haughty spirit, or do you have a humble and contrite spirit?
Let’s pray: Father, take away anything that keeps me away from you. I do not want a haughty spirit. I do not want to think of myself more than what I am, your child. Give me a humble spirit who trusts you in everything. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
