Put away that fly swatter and Raid! This brings the series of my favorite songs having some insect or other cringe-worthy thing in the title to a close. Lots of bees in this series, and I'm closing it out with one more bee. Here's my favorite "insect" song.
#1: The Bees - Lee Ann Womack
I first heard Kelly Hogan sing this song and was mesmerized. And understand something, I love Kelly Hogan's voice. But when I heard Lee Ann Womack's original recording I about fell over. Wow.
A gorgeous, bittersweet song about an unpleasant childhood ("like the back of my daddy's hand, the only thing I've ever known;" "sometimes it's a bitter taste for a motherless child so out of place"), where the protagonist imagines life as a bee ("I work for the queen all day").
The song, however, for all the sadness of the first two verses, has a happy ending.
What a voice. What a song.
Thanks for reading.

I was rooting for "The Spider Sings" by Bourbon Princess. Seriously, what a (mostly) sad song.
