Matt Cassel, 34, who was scheduled to hit the free agent trial starting on March 9, 2017 has signed a two year, $5.25 million dollar contract to be the backup quarterback to Marcus Mariota who is the starting quarterback of the Tennessee Titans.
Mariota is recovering from a broken right leg that he suffered in Week 16 during the Titans loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Cassel started the final game of the 2016 regular football season in the Titans win over the Houston Texans which may have saved him from hitting the free agent market.
Cassel by no means is an elite quarterback but had the Titans let him hit the free agent market their other option was third string quarterback Alex Tanney to back up Mariota in 2017.

I know what you mean. Many of us average fans are trying to figure out how a sports star gets paid millions for playing a kids game.

That is true since Matt did a pretty good job winning his only start against the Texans.
