Favorite Live Bands #8 - Radiohead

As a music junkie, I'm here to tell you that nothing beats live music. There's just something about seeing a band onstage, playing songs that you love. Hence, my Favorite Live Bands series. We are at #8, which belongs to Radiohead.
Taking their name from the Talking Heads song "Radio Head," Radiohead formed in 1985 in Oxfordshire, England. They are three-time Grammy winners, and have sold over 30 million albums worldwide.
They are also seemingly impossible to get tickets for one of their concerts. Everytime they came through Denver, they sold out as quickly as possible.
Such was the case with their 2003 tour for their album Hail to the Thief: a sold out show at Denver's legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater.
But I got lucky. A friend of mine did manage to get tickets, only something came up and he couldn't go. Willing to pay scalper prices, I told him I'd buy them for whatever he wanted. He sold them to me at face value.
I will never forget this show. Opening with "There There" (they rocked it,) they proceeded to treat us to a night of great songs, such as "Karma Police," "Paranoid Android," "The National Anthem" (my favorite Radiohead song,) even "A Drunken Punchup at a Wedding."
I spent a lot of time watching Jonny Greenwood, whose guitar play was brilliant (and he remained entertaining during the electronic oriented songs, playing all those weird electronic instruments that, as I once read somewhere, he took two years to perfect.)
With the lights of the Denver Metro Area serving as a backdrop, it was a special evening. I got to see one of my favorite bands in top form (and their light show was spectacular,) playing great song after great song.
If you ever get the chance (meaning, if you can get tickets,) I highly recommend seeing them. It was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. As great as their albums are, Radiohead is even better live.

It's the best, unless it's a cover band.

@FayeHazel - It was kind of a joke. I watch cover bands in bars all the time.

If I said I wasn't a big Radiohead fan would you say I'm a creep?
I'm amazed that they've been together for over 30 years with no personnel changes. Don't see that much in music anymore.

They didn't even do "Creep." The only disappointment of the evening. But yeah, I can't even think of anyone else that's done that off the top of my head.

@JohnRoberts - They probably are, although I had read that they did do it once in awhile during that tour.

Never had a chance to watch Radiohead. I don't think they've been to the Philippines.

@teamfreak16 I would watch them provided that the tickets aren't that expensive. Manila has a bad rep when it comes to ticket prices. Take for example the recent Coldplay tour here in Asia. Among the Philippines, Singapore, and Korea, guess which country had the most expensive tickets - yup, good ole' Philippines!

@allen0187 - Gee, I can only imagine what scalper prices would be there.

I am jealous, I would LOVE to go to a show at Red Rocks one daym have heard nothing but good things about that place. Though, I have seen Radiohead before, back in 2008, on their "In Rainbows" tour, and that was quite amazing, Grizzly Bear opened for them, which was pretty awesome too! Yeah that was a good night, and I was glad to hear "Idioteque" love that song.. Of course the whole set was great though.

@teamfreak16 That's great! That most certainly is a perk, indeed. Hopefully I get to go there one day, I have always wanted to go to Denver, if only to go see a Colorado Avalanche hockey home game, but to go to Red Rocks, that would also be amazing too!

I must be getting old when Radiohead are now 30 year veterans.

Ah it shouldn't surprise me -- and you are so right, there is something only a little shy of magic about live music. I love "Street Spirit" even if it reminds me of a "friend" I lost touch with

That's a good one to love. Check out Christopher O'Reilly sometime. He's a classical pianist that loves Radiohead, so he always does a Radiohead show the night before his classical show. At least, he used to. I saw him, he's brilliant.

Rock and roll concerts performed by your favorite artist live are usually better than seeing it on television or buying their recordings.

Oh, much better. It's like hockey. I love watching it on TV, but it's so much better when you are at the game.

@teamfreak16 That is true. The best concerts I went to were to see Roger Whittaker and Tom Jones perform in New Orleans in 1988 and Sir Paul McCartney a few years later.

@Deepizzaguy - You saw Tom Jones? Sweet! My grandma had a thing for him when I was a kid.

I know. It doesn't seem like they have been around that long. Especially with all the original members.
