Siege of Pleven, was a major battle of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, fought by the joint army of Russia and Romania against the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman defense held up the main Russian advance southwards into Bulgaria for five months, encouraging other great powers actively to support the Ottoman cause. Eventually, superior Russian and Romanian numbers forced the garrison to capitulate. I never heard of that war. It seems like the European countries have always fought against the Turks for centuries, but now they're letting them all into Europe without a struggle.

It is a great long subject. Other countries fought but Bulgaria and some other countries were directly under Ottoman rule. All the struggle was about some countries claims to have influence and to rearrange the geopolitical order like nowadays. But Turkey as a country have changed itself in comparison with its status quo then. Anyway thank you for your interest! Yes, there is some rush from Turkey to enter the European Union although Turkey has some small territory on the European continent.
