Our 3rd stop on our trip to the east coast was Mammoth Caves in Kentucky. I had never been there so this was exciting for me. I don't have claustrophobia so I wasn't concerned about that when I went in the caves, but the walking back up out of the cave had me concerned. I don't do steps well.
We went on the 2 hour tour that goes something like 400 feet underground, for a total of 3/4 of a mile. It includes the frozen Niagara portion of the cave. Sadly I didn't get any pictures of the cave as flash wasn't allowed and my camera needed the light to get a good shot. As it was winter there wasn't a lot of people in our group, they said sometimes the group is over 100 people, ours was like 40 people which was a nice number and we could all hear the park ranger explaining things.
While the Frozen Niagara part of the cave was totally amazing I thought the collapsed area was the most fascinating. Boulders the size of houses had collapsed in one area of the cave and there were piles and piles of these huge boulders. It was just amazing to stand next to rocks of this size. I sure wish I could have gotten some pictures. My son managed to get a few which I will get when he is done with his trip. He will be stopping here again before returning to Michigan to find a job.
This picture is part of the tour I took and I got it from Google Free Images.

I don't care for going underground so splunking isn't for me. I have friends in Indiana who hae been there many times and they love it.

I won't go into caves unless there is a tour. It was pretty amazing though.

@fishtiger58 We have a touist spot - Lost Sea - not far from here...an underground river and you take a boat ride - not on your life will I do that! First off you have to walk down a whole bunch of steps that are stone covered in moss - way too slippery for these old feet.

@AbbyGreenhill Oh that sounds fun. I will have to look that up. I would do that. I just looked it's kind of expensive 20 bucks for an adult. but it sounds fun. A glass bottomed boat wow cool.

It was pretty amazing, they say there are around 400 miles of caves within the system, many miles not investigated yet.

They call it the Frozen Niagara because the rock looks like frozen water falling as if a waterfall. It's just huge I can't even begin to tell you how high this rock is. Amazing.

@fishtiger58 Caves are cool. We had millions of steps to walk down and up in France. They were circular with minimum lighting. I was afraid I'd fall down and break my neck.

Mammoth Caves doesn't have elevators, we had to walk down many steps and back up but it was still pretty darn cool to see.

@just4him I was worried about the climbing but it was fine and we had a great time in the caves.

It was amazing and as I said while the cave in all it's glory was great, the collapsed area was my fav.

We have a nearby underground cave we have visited a few times. I'm not sure it's quite that deep, but it was quite fun to visit. We went during the summer this past year, on a 90 degree day. It was 50 degrees in the cave. It's always 50 degrees in the cave!

Yes they mentioned that at Mammoth Caves as well. Good place to visit on a hot day. We had a wonderful time there.
