In director David Koepp's 2012 film, Premium Rush, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Wilee, a graduate of Columbia Law School, who is not eager to take the Bar Exam and become a part of the legal scene and lifestyle.
So he works as a New York City bike messenger, riding what we cyclists call a "fixie" (a fixed gear bicycle: one gear and no brakes. You can't coast, because your pedals never stop turning.)
One day, Wilee's girlfriend Vanessa's (Dania Ramirez) roommate, Nima (Jamie Chung,) hands Wilee an envelope to be delivered, premium rush, by 7pm.
Wilee has no idea what is in the envelope, but a corrupt cop (Michael Shannon) does, and he wants it. Badly.
And the chase is on.
Premium Rush is a pretty intense little movie, and one of the best cycling films I've seen. Gordon-Levitt is his usual solid self, and more importantly, looks good on a bike (this is not as easy as it sounds, honestly. The actor put in a lot of hours with his stunt double, working on appearing natural while riding.) Michael Shannon is just as over the top as he was in The Runaways, which, in this instance, works out just fine as he portrays a desperate, crooked detective.
The cycling scenes were well done, and the film gives the viewer insight into the bike messenger culture.
All in all, I thought Premium Rush was a blast.

I saw Premium Rush. Such pressure on the riders about delivery time and making a buck against competition. Someday drones will replace the bikers.

I'm surprised it hasn't already started.

can't think of many cycling films apart from Belleville Rendevouz (brilliant) and BMX Bandits (awful) - this sounds good though

That's pretty cool. I wonder if he did the majority of the actual cycling? It's cool that he practiced up for it. Acting, what a cool job - they get to learn the stuff that their characters do

I know he had a double for the stunts, but he did do some of the riding himself. There is a behind the scenes thing with the DVD.
