I had read about an article that we can find love spoons in Wales. In the 1600s, the traditionally made love spoons were usually crafted by men and presented to their old men. Obviously, showing love to their fathers. Years go by, the love spoons are used for decorations. Do you have love spoons? Image Credit: encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com

The tradition of carving decorative spoons to be given by a young man to the girl he was courting (certainly NOT usually to his father - I don't know where you got that idea!) goes back to at least the 17th Century. They were meant to be a demonstration of the young man's skill at wood carving and therefore of his suitability and his ability to support his wife. They became so intricate and decorative that they lost their purpose as a spoon and became something which was displayed as an ornament and a token of the couple's love for each other. Although the tradition has survived in Wales (though it is now mostly a tourist souvenir craft), there are examples of love spoons from other countries in Europe and, in fact, the oldest surviving love spoon is from Germany and has been dated to 1664. You can buy them online from a number of sites and, if you visit Wales, you can find any number of rather poorly made examples in tourist shops but, really, it's the sort of thing where a serious collector would visit antique shops looking for old, original examples, rather than modern ones made for the tourist trade.

I really like unique things across the globe. If I can only have the chance to travel all of these countries, perhaps I had been putting all unique items in my gallery. Unfortunately, it wasn't possible at this point in time. But I do buy some souvenirs if I am traveling to different places. It is definitely a keepsake for me.

Struck a memory or two as I have been in Wales a number of times and have seen them around a lot. Have not seen any of that shape over here but there might well be. Wales is very close to me as I was born near there and I also lived and worked there. A collection of them would be very nice to have and would look nice on a Wall.

i didn't know there were such things as love spoons. i don't love or hate spoons, but i need one to eat (even if there's no fork). so if you're able to buy a love spoon, what do you plan to do with it?
