No matter how long I go without a beer, I still crave it.

I stopped drinking beer several years ago but that doesn't mean I don't have a craving for it. If anyone ever tells you they have beat the cravings for alcohol, those who have drank for many years until they stopped for health reasons because it was really taking a toll on their personal health and mental well being, don't think for one minute that they do not have a constant craving for it. I believe that addiction is as powerful for alcoholics who have stopped consuming beer, wine or hard liquor, who still have constant irrational cravings for both the taste of it as well as the effects of it, but I also believe it can be conquered through personal determination to win out over it in spite of it's powerful appeal to our basic senses. It is no wonder alcohol sales have increased and become more easily available world wide. Big tobacco, the makers of wine and beer and the manufacturers of firearms are getting rich off our basic desire for them, and it is an irrational though very strong emotional and sometimes physical addiction that generates the sale of these and other things that destroy us and that we are in constant denial of it. I am not alone. I know that my brothers both have addictions to both alcohol, cigarettes and drugs. It is probably one of the worst health destroyers next to fast food and junk food and other things. Is there a way to stop the cravings? I don't think so, at least I don't know any. But the thing that keeps me away from alcohol, tobacco and of course, firearms, ATF, is that they all have one big thing in common ... The end result of the big 3 is of course, end of life. It's one reason I just say no to the big 3, even though deep down I have cravings for them so how do I manage to compensate? I live with the desire to drink and instead reach for strong coffee and tea, but even that can be bad in excess. If you have never drank a single alcoholic beverage in your life, don't start, and if you have never smoked a reefer or a cigar or a cigarette, don't start, and if you own a gun, please don't leave it loaded but remember to register it. There once was a time when most of us can remember when the big 3 did not have any control over us, but that was only because we were too young to know about it. The bad thing about hind sight, is that ... once we are old enough to realize the big 3 are addictive it is only because it's too late to go back and undo our addictions, and the only thing we have to do is accept that we have a constant desire for them but know that in the end they will end our health, our life and any hope for a prosperous future.

Maybe it isn't the substance so much, but what you feel or felt it did for you.

Yes, it did make me feel for a short period somewhat euphoric. That is a state of mind I seldom experience these days. Perhaps I was self medicating.

You are wise to know that you still have a craving and wise not to drink any.

Yes, I am wiser today than I was yesterday, in fact. One day at a time. I am wiser day after day.
