Why is rose beautiful and thorny, at the same time?

Why is a rose flower thorny in spite of its beautiful look and fragrance? Are the beautiful things are associated with thorny and difficult elements?

yes i think the rose is the natures equivalent of a woman, beautiful but with hidden thorns if you try to get too close
