Interpretation of the functions and menus of digital photography

Sirs, I have newly purchased a canon S3 IS digital camera. I find many menus and functions but I do not know under what specific condition what are the menus and functions to be operated. Please educate me.The manual provided with the camera is not serving my purpose. With regards Ajoy Kr. Mukhopadhyay
