Favorite Male Lyricists #10 - Robert Smith

This particular series was inspired by a great Steely Dan lyric that @FourWalls included in a comment earlier tonight, that got me thinking about my favorite lyricists, hence this Favorite Male Lyricists countdown. I'm only doing ten (she could probably do the first hundred-part music series on MyLot with this topic, and still have a lot left over!) These aren't necessarily the best, since it's all subjective anyway, but they are the ones that I seem to listen to the most. Because there is nothing like a well-written song. Nothing.
Robert Smith is the vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter for English alternative group The Cure. Has been ever since he formed the band back in 1976.
Smith has a knack for crafting great songs. He has a wicked pop sensibility, as evidenced by tunes such as "Just Like Heaven" or "High."
But it's his darker material that he's most known for, songs that can leave a person feeling helpless, such as "A Forest," or, say, the entire Disintegration album (just try to listen to that thing in one sitting without coming away feeling lost and hopeless. It's impossible.)
About a year ago, I did a Favorite Cure Songs series, and "From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea" was #1. I'll use it again here, because it simply oozes heartbreak, and is a non-hit example of just what Robert Smith is capable of.
Plus, it's my favorite. And the lyrics are a big reason why. Be sure to have a tissue ready, just in case.

Hopefully they've surely done enough to get into the Hall.

Nice choice. Don't forget "Spider man", talk about creepy vibe there...
I have a friend who is named after a Steely Dan song "Aja".

The first time I heard "Lullaby" was in a club in Germany. I was pretty loaded, so I didn't recognize it as The Cure. I trespassed into the DJ booth to ask. Surprised I didn't get bounced.

@teamfreak16 Lol, wow! What great memories - at least you were only asking the artist of a song, I'm sure they've heard much worse requests. :-)

I think it's one of his best. My favorite, of course.

This was early 90's, but I don't think it got played on the radio. I never heard it, anyway.
