The calendar is almost flipped over to the last day. There are only two songs left. The top song is predictable, but this one may be a left-field entry. One that will get positive feedback, but still a left-field entry. Here's the penultimate song with a day of the week in the title.
#2: Sunday Papers - Joe Jackson
Well, I've got nothing against the press
They wouldn't print it if it wasn't true!
Joe Jackson has only had two big hits in the US (and one of them will show up in another countdown soon). And that's sad. Although he came out of the "punk" era his music is all over the place. When I saw him in 1982 he had no guitar player in the band. His album Jumpin' Jive (which preceded the "big hit" album Night and Day) was filled with new renditions of swing/jazz songs from the 30s and 40s.
And he was the subject of a Gallagher joke: "Does Joe Jackson have to be in his videos?"
Okay, so Joe's not the cutest guy on the block, but dang he made some of the best post-punk music of the late 70s and early 80s! This song, which was the follow-up to the 1979 hit (albeit unsuccessful in the US), takes an almost Randy Newman-esque sarcastic attack on those horrid British tabloids (and their US equivalents).
I wish this had been a bigger song in the US. It's one of my favorite Joe Jackson songs.

I love Joe! A key song on a great album full of them.
