The "PayPal" GIFT Scam

March 15, 2017 2:14pm CST
The world will always have what we call scam artists, though I strongly disagree with the name. Art is about beauty and there is no beauty in what they do. Everyone on this site who collects or hopes to collect earnings uses the same method of collecting set earnings, so I imagine many of you have been through this. I got an email today from "PayPal" but not in the email account I use with PayPal. This was in an old email that I had had PayPal through once, but it was a long time ago, and I wasn't able to get back into it. The email stated that it was confirming a payment, as a GIFT to Steve MCcarthy that I had apparently arranged. At first I wondered if someone had hacked my old account and was using it, but then I noticed the interesting choice of words they used. "The money will be sent to Steve MCcarthy as a GIFT like you mentioned." The high school I attended may not have been able to afford text books for all the students who needed them, but every student there learned at least a few things about knowing when your being scammed. A real professional would never have written "like you mentioned." Furthermore, the link to cancel the "order" wanted all of my information including my credit card information, to verify that "I' am who I say I am. I guess they didn't know that I didn't have any credit card when I had that account. I submitted feedback with PayPal about it, not to complain to them but to send them the email of the fraudulent scammer (hopping they get caught), and I wrote this so I could share it with all of you incase you get something similar and are worried or wondering at all. This is not a real PayPal email czteg@stellamare.univ-corse.fr

I have gotten fake emails from Swagbucks, Paypal, and eBay. I never had an eBay account and I knew the other two were phony, also. I always forward these emails to the right people so they know what scammers are doing and maybe could stop them. I used to get emails warning me about fines for real world trading on a game that I never played, also.

@AgoriphobicPirate Paypal and eBay are not interlocked anymore. They split company maybe a couple of years ago.

@akalinus Oh, I didnt even know were linked, lol. I got my first credit card less than a year ago, and it usually doesn't work online for some reason. I just figured eBay would be targeted for fraud because they're so big and have been around for so long. Longer than PayPul if I remember correctly....

Wow, I've been with swagbucks for close to eight years now and never gotten one claiming to be them. Not surprise about eBay though.
