When your daughter starts cooking dinner for the family

I must be dreaming. Last night, my 9-year-old made grilled pork slices for dinner. And she refused to let me supervise her! LOL. She told me to stay upstairs and rest in bed. So I did and got nearly an hour of horizontal time. As far as i can recall, this is probably the second or third time that our daughter proposed to cook dinner. She feels so accomplished when she sees us devouring the food that she prepared. Last time, she made chicken soup with lots of vegetables and herbs. At what age did you or your daughter start cooking? *Image credit: whitesession/Pixabay

They were helping me at that age, but not doing much on their own. They started each doing one meal per week when they were about 12 and 16. They found they enjoyed planning what to make and being in charge. I always acted as "cooks helper" when they were cooking. Set the table and that sort of thing.

@almostoveryou they might appreciate being in charge of you too. Or not. My girl always loved playing "restaurant" before even cooking. They drew up menus etc.

That's awesome! I did notice that they like being in charge of the menu. Last Christmas I had my girls (ages 6 and 9) prepare potato salad for their daddy, and they made a really good one. I will remember to act as their kitchen helper next time they cook a dish for the family. :o)

I didn't have kids but remember cooking for my parents for the first time. My Mom raved about my bacon. I thought that see was just being a Mom, talking it up. The next time that I cooked bacon, my Mom was there and saw what I did. Before I put the bacon in the pan, I greased the pan with butter. She told me that I didn't have to do that with bacon. Apparently the butter soaked in and gave it some more flavor and made it crispier.

I can imagine how good that bacon must've been! Butter adds flavor. I might have to try that next time I fry some bacon.

My eldest also likes to cook (although when she tries new things she still doesn't like them!) She's 11.
