After a few days of neglect, we are at #8 in my Favorite Male Lyricists series, and that spot belongs to a name that regularly pops up in these music countdowns, Mark Sandman. Best known as the lyricist/bassist/vocalist for the band Morphine, which continued until he died onstage in Italy in 1999, Mark Sandman also served in that capacity for the band's Treat Her Right and The Hypnosonics. Although he created and made several instruments, Sandman was best known for playing a homemade two-string slide bass. He was also known for groovy lyrics inspired by the likes of Jack Kerouac, Jim Thompson, and James Ellroy, apparent on tunes such as "Buena," "Radar," "Super Sex," and "Thursday." Sandman's songs often told stories, which is evidenced by songs such as "Thursday," and "Have a Lucky Day," in which the singer takes a trip to Atlantic City, where he finds a blackjack dealer named Mabel. It's a fun tune, and a great example of Sandman's lyrical capabilities. I loved that guy. Thanks for the music, Mark. R.I.P. "Player's win, and winner's play, have a lucky day." Not heard of him before, but that was a tragic end. Not sure I'd like to go with an audience!

I saw that they have a documentary about him, released in 2011. Have you seen it? Some music documentaries are woeful, but I've seen some great ones as well. The sound from them with just a bass (and a two-string bass at that!), drums, and a sax is incredibly heavy. You'd never expect it.

Nice choice! I only got to know them a few years ago so I was sad to learn that there would be no new offerings on account of the demise of Sandman. My fave by them: "Rope on Fire". Nice choice.

Thank you. You might like Bourbon Princess. Sounds like Morphine, and the singer plays a fretless bass. She's really good.
