We are at #7 in my Favorite Male Lyricists series, in which I countdown my favorite male songwriters. They may not be the best, or the most popular, but they are the ones that I listen to the most. The 7th spot belongs to Martin Gore. Born in the London suburb of Dagenham, Martin Gore has been writing songs since he was 12. He is the guitarist/keyboardist/sometime vocalist for Depeche Mode, and puts out solo material as well. An original member of the band, Gore has been Depeche Mode's main songwriter since Vince Clarke left the group in 1981. Gore is a recipient of the Ivor Novello Award from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors. Martin Gore is known for his passionate lyrics, which Depeche Mode have been performing for around 40 years now. This passion is evident on tunes such as "A Question of Lust," "Fly on the Windscreen," "Stripped," and "In Your Room" (it doesn't get much more passionate than "In Your Room!") Since Gore has been writing the vast majority of Depeche Mode's songs from 1981-on, there is obviously a much larger body of work to pull from, but I've always preferred Gore's lyrics over Clarke's. Depeche Mode formed in 1980. They have never, in all these years, released a bad album. Martin Gore is a key part of that. (Info verified by Wikipedia)
