Race and Sexual Orientation on the Annual Census

I understand the categories of race or sexual orientation are required on the annual census .... but sometimes I feel people who are routinely discriminated against might become paranoid. It's hard enough to facts about yourself to someone that you never met.... let be alone be required to classify yourself to a system that they might feel demonizes them..... Is it just another tool for discrimination? Anyone find it terrifying as I do?
