Mothering Sunday ... It's that one day of the year which celebrates my failure as a woman. It's not really that I *forgot* to have children, just that it didn't happen. And it's unlikely to happen now, what with me being SO VERY OLD!
I don't mind so much, but it does get so irksome when my Facebook feed is full of fellow UKians posting images of the lovely balloons, flowers, cards and other presents they received from their beautiful children this morning. Because, you know ... Mummies are amazeballs and they need to advertise this fact on social media. My kiddies love me! they proudly boast, as they compete with the other Yummy Mummies to see who came downstairs to the biggest and brightest bouquet imaginable.
I wish there was a day just for me, and other people like me. Happy You're Not A Parent, But You're Still Wonderful, Here's A Card And Whatnot! Then I'd be able to compete with my other childless buddies and all the Mummies and Daddies in the world could grumble about how easy it is to have no children and we don't deserve a special Hallmark day.
And to show that I'm genuinely not bitter ... Happy Mummies Day to all the UK Mummies!
*grin*
{the image is from Google and the title of this post is from the six year old me, written on a scrap of envelope to my Mumsy. she still has it.}

There used to be a time when keeping up with the Jones's was restricted to your small circle of immediate friends and acquaintances. Now, thanks to social media the Jones's have gone global.
Even Mother's Day gets used as a tool for displaying how perfect someone's life is. Look at me, look at me. My children love me more than yours love you because my husband can afford a bigger bouquet of flowers.
It's all very sad really!!

Precisely! A friend {and I use the term loosely} on Facebook received a card from her cat for being a Purrfect Mummy. I, in all seriousness, asked Husband why neither of our cats got me anything. I mean, really!?

Noone is a failure as a woman because she doesn´t have kids. If I were to judge, I think a failure as a mother would be to have them and not take care of them. Although, some people just cannot, for several reasons. So that is not an enonough reason either.
Still, a failure as a mother is not the same as a failure as a woman. Womanhood means many other things besides giving birth.

I know. But Mothering Sunday - and, to be fair, any declaration that mums are wonderful - does tend to make me feel that I'm not fulfilling some purpose in life. As if one can only achieve female perfection when a child has been grown in the womb. :)

@Poppylicious Gimme a break! There are lots of things that can fulfill a person besides giving birth. Where do you live?

@Gillygirl I absolutly agree although I have 2 daughters. But I am not defined as a woman by giving birth nor am I defined now by having cancer.
