Favorite Male Lyricists #3 - Maynard James Keenan

I've been sick as a dog, as they say. Nevertheless, duty calls. We are at #3 in my Favorite Male Lyricists series, a distinction held by Maynard James Keenan.
Maynard James Keenan is the vocalist and primary lyricist for Grammy-winning metal band Tool. He also serves in the same capacity in the bands A Perfect Circle (co-writer,) and Puscifer.
Often leaving his complex lyrics open for interpretation (he will not even include them in liner notes, yet sometimes later publishes them online,) Keenan writes songs that are sometimes of a personal nature, and are always interesting--the message boards are full of fans breaking down song lyrics in an attempt to figure out Maynard's intent.
There might be disagreements regarding Keenan's lyrical content, but there's no denying the brilliance of tunes such as "Lateralus," in which the number of syllables per line match the Fibonicci numbers, or "Jambi," which uses the metrical foot of iamb. Then there is "Forty Six & 2," which explores Carl Jung's idea of man evolving to having two extra chromosomes.
What can I say? I've been infatuated with Tool since I first heard their complex music. Maynard's lyrics are a big part of that complexity.

They are too "loud" or "metal" for my taste. However, I have a friend who said that metal musicians are far more complex than the casual listener gives them credit for. He said there are amazing technical details in the music and the lyrics (as you point out here) that people could realize if they'd just get past the head banging.

Oh, most definitely. A lot of metal musicians are much better than the average person gives them credit for.
